Body Found in Stockport Woodland Identified as Missing Man Steven Caulfield

A body discovered Wednesday afternoon near Middlewood Way in Stockport has been identified as Steven Caulfield, who vanished October 1 during a routine walk, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

The grim discovery came at approximately 12pm when a GMP officer located the remains in a wooded area off the popular trail. Caulfield, whose family reported him missing after he failed to return from his walk, had been the subject of an extensive two-month search operation involving specialized units across challenging terrain.

His Majesty’s Senior Coroner for Manchester West has been notified, and authorities say they do not suspect foul play in the death. A coroner’s file is being prepared as Caulfield’s grieving family receives support from dedicated officers.

Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, Stockport District Commander, addressed the heartbreaking outcome: “Our deepest condolences remain with Steven’s family and friends, who have been devastated by this traumatic news, we have officers supporting them through this difficult time. It has been a challenging couple of months since the missing report came to us in GMP and our Tactical Aid Unit, Specialist Search, Canine and Underwater Units were all utilised to search for Steven in challenging conditions and locations around the Middlewood Way. We hope today’s discovery provides some answers for Steven’s loved ones.”

The investigation had generated widespread public engagement, with missing person appeals shared extensively on social media throughout Greater Manchester and across the UK, generating numerous sighting reports from concerned citizens.
