Update following internal investigation into alleged racial discrimination against officer in Bury

An internal investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has found nine officers with a case to answer for gross misconduct following allegations of racial discrimination against an officer in Bury. Eight officers are suspended, and one is restricted from working in Bury. The investigation, launched in July 2024, stems from racist remarks reported in December 2023. A separate IOPC investigation into another unrelated incident involving seven officers is ongoing. GMP emphasizes its commitment to cultural awareness and supporting victims.

Nine Greater Manchester Police officers face gross misconduct proceedings over alleged racial discrimination against a colleague in Bury, with eight currently suspended from duty and one restricted from working in the district.

The Professional Standards Directorate launched its investigation in July 2024 following reports that an officer endured racist remarks from colleagues the previous December. The probe concluded that nine officers have cases to answer for gross misconduct, though no hearing date has been set.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, head of professional standards, confirmed the investigation uncovered “deeply concerning allegations into racist remarks about two officers in unrelated incidents.” He added: “Ensuring we uphold the highest standards of professional behaviour across GMP is essential, and it is only right that when matters such as these are reported to us, we take all necessary action.”

The force is also cooperating with a separate Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation involving seven Bury officers in an unrelated incident, five of whom remain suspended. Chief Superintendent Kirsty Oliver, Bury district commander, stated she has “shared the shock and concern shown by my officers, staff, and the local community” since learning of the allegations last summer, while emphasizing that policing services in Bury have not been affected by the ongoing investigations.
