Two new station plans take step forward

Plans for upgrades to Mossley and Greenfield train stations have progressed with a scoping report submitted to Tameside Council. The upgrades, part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), include extending platforms to accommodate longer trains, relocating Mossley station 300 meters northeast, and adding new footbridges and lifts. Network Rail anticipates construction starting in summer 2028, taking approximately 18 months to complete, following public consultation feedback integration.

Mossley and Greenfield stations moved closer to a £multi-billion facelift yesterday after Network Rail lodged the formal scoping document that kicks off the planning process for their Transpennine Route Upgrade.

The submission to Tameside council sets out the environmental, economic and social impacts of lengthening both platforms so that longer trains with more seats can serve the Saddleworth stretch between Stalybridge and Diggle. If approved, Mossley station will be shifted 300 m north-east towards Greenfield and rebuilt with a fully-accessible footbridge and lifts; Greenfield will keep its present site but gain the same extended platforms.

Network Rail confirmed that construction is pencilled in for summer 2028 and should take about 18 months. A spokesperson said: “Following the public consultation held in September, the feedback is now being considered by our projects team for the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), to see how we can integrate this in our work where appropriate. We would like to thank the local community and businesses for sharing their thoughts as part of the consultation.”

The wider TRU programme promises faster, greener, more frequent services across the North, better-connecting Manchester, Leeds and York on a cleaner, more reliable railway.
