Three arrested after moorland fire in Bury

Three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of arson following a moorland fire in Bury on 13 May 2025. The fire, reported at Holcombe Hill, was contained and extinguished by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). All three suspects were bailed pending further enquiries. Authorities emphasized the dangers of wildfires and promoted the Be Moor Aware campaign to prevent such incidents.

Three teenagers are in custody on suspicion of arson after flames tore across Holcombe Hill in Bury on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a major emergency response.

Emergency crews raced to the moorland shortly after 12:30 pm when the first reports of smoke reached Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters and police officers worked through the afternoon to contain the blaze, which was brought under control before dusk. An immediate investigation was launched once the last embers were extinguished.

A teenage boy was arrested and questioned the following day, then released on bail pending further enquiries. Two more boys were taken into custody on Thursday, both also bailed while detectives continue their work. Detective Inspector Andy Wright of Bury CID confirmed the inquiry is being treated as arson. “We have managed to apprehend three teenagers in relation to this incident, all of them have been bailed following interviews with our officers,” he said. “Fires can have such a devastating effect and we are lucky that this has not caused a significant amount of damage, or cost lives.”

Station Manager Ady Taylor, the service’s wildfire lead and national tactical adviser, urged visitors to heed the summer-long “Be Moor Aware” campaign. “No BBQs, fires or fireworks - as they can easily result in wildfires,” Taylor warned.
