TikTok Job Scams Target Greater Manchester Residents, Police Warn

Five Greater Manchester residents reported losing up to £1,000 each this week to employment scams circulating on TikTok, according to police reports. The fraudulent schemes direct victims to fake websites and Telegram groups, charging registration fees for access to job listings while promising quick profits through cryptocurrency investments.

Detective Sergeant Stacey Shannon from GMP’s Economic Crime Unit explained the mechanics of these operations: “A job scam is a fraudulent scheme where criminals pose as employers or recruitment agencies to deceive job seekers. These scams can take various forms but the ultimate goal is to either steal money, personal detail - or both.”

The scams particularly target young people seeking flexible online work through videos claiming to offer easy, high-paying remote positions requiring minimal effort. “Scammers create videos claiming to offer easy, high-paying remote jobs, often requiring minimal effort. Many of these scams target young people looking for flexible online work, making them particularly dangerous,” Shannon warned.

Victims face requests for upfront training fees, demands for sensitive personal information, or fraudulent job offers delivered through unsolicited social media contact. Police advise anyone who believes they’ve fallen victim to immediately stop communication with the scammers, document their details, and report to Action Fraud while contacting their bank if money has been exchanged.
