Saddleworth's 'missing' dry stone walls

Concerned locals in Saddleworth report thefts of dry stone walls and coping stones, threatening community heritage and tourism appeal, with similar incidents reported last year.

Saddleworth’s centuries-old dry stone walls have been targeted again after thieves stripped coping stones from Gelfield Lane near the parish church, leaving another gaping hole in the heritage landmark that draws tourists to the villages.

The latest theft has sparked outrage among residents who fear their community’s historic character is under systematic attack. The hand-built walls, which line roadsides, reservoirs and farms throughout the area, serve as both working agricultural boundaries and cultural treasures that attract visitors from around the world.

Last year saw a wave of similar thefts that were reported to police and documented extensively on social media. During that spree, one resident condemned the criminals, declaring: “These thieves are stealing our heritage. It’s shameful.”

The distinctive dry stone construction, built without mortar using techniques passed down through generations, represents irreplaceable craftsmanship that residents say cannot be replicated once destroyed.
