RSPCA appeal after puppy with severe skin condition is abandoned in Chadderton

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a young Cane Corso puppy named Pearla, suffering from severe skin conditions and untreated mange, was found abandoned near the Rochdale Canal in Chadderton. She is now receiving veterinary care.

A bald and bleeding Cane Corso puppy, suffering from a severe untreated skin condition, was discovered running loose along the Rochdale Canal in Chadderton last month, prompting an urgent investigation by animal welfare authorities.

The 14- to 16-week-old female, now named Pearla, was found near Chadderton Hall Park on January 17 by a member of the public who took her home before contacting the local dog warden. The puppy, who was not microchipped or wearing a collar, had lost significant amounts of hair on her face and front legs, with painful scabs covering her body from constant scratching.

“She was in a dreadful state and would have been feeling very uncomfortable from what appears to be a long-standing, untreated skin condition,” said RSPCA Inspector Jess Pierce, who has been canvassing the area for CCTV footage and witnesses. “Her head and front legs were bald and bleeding and covered in painful sores and scabs where she’d been itching and scratching herself.”

Pearla is now receiving intensive treatment at the RSPCA’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, including medicated baths and antibiotics for demodex mange, a condition that compromises the immune system. Vets have also diagnosed her with bilateral entropion, where her eyelids roll inward and irritate her eyes. The RSPCA is appealing for anyone with information about Pearla’s abandonment to contact their appeal line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 01432227.
