Rescue heroes' road trip hopes to raise much-needed funds

Members of the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, Andy Hadfield and Si Taylor, are undertaking a 1,600-mile motorcycle road trip to visit all 24 Scottish Mountain Rescue team bases in eight days to raise funds and awareness for their Scottish counterparts. The journey, inspired by Nick Ray's book and Ewan McGregor's motorcycle adventure, aims to support the Vehicle Replacement Project. Daily updates are available via their website and OMRT's social channels.

Two Oldham Mountain Rescue Team motorcyclists embarked on a grueling 1,600-mile journey Saturday to visit every one of Scotland’s 24 volunteer mountain rescue bases in just eight days.

Andy Hadfield and Si Taylor left Oldham on their bikes determined to circle the country—Highlands, islands and all—to drum up cash and visibility for Scottish Mountain Rescue’s Vehicle Replacement Project.

Inspiration struck after Hadfield read Nick Ray’s Strong Winds Are Forecast, an account of kayaking to every RNLI lifeboat station in Scotland, and rewatched Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s 2004 Long Way Round saga. “We just had to make it the ‘Long Way Roond’ this time,” Taylor laughed before departure.

The pair are posting a daily blog and live map at their dedicated website while Oldham Mountain Rescue Team feeds updates through its social channels for supporters tracking the charity ride.
