Post bosses respond to delivery delays
Royal Mail has addressed complaints about mail delivery delays in Oldham and Saddleworth, attributing them to high Christmas mail volumes and staff sickness. They assured that the backlog has been cleared and normal service should resume this week.
Royal Mail has blamed Christmas mail volumes and staff sickness for delivery delays that left some Oldham and Saddleworth residents receiving post just once last week.
Residents reported going without mail between Monday and Thursday, while others only received deliveries on a single day during the period.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said today that deliveries in Oldham occurred at least every other day the week before last due to the surge in Christmas mail and increased sickness absence at the local delivery office.
“Our posties worked to clear this backlog last week and service should return to normal this week,” the spokesperson said.
The company explained that during busy periods, priority is given to clearing parcels from delivery offices first. “Parcels take up far more space than letters, and their sheer number during the festive season means they can build up, block walkways and present a health and safety risk to posties. Removing them first allows all mail, including letters, to keep moving and is a necessary part of our planning,” the spokesperson added.
