Popular Oldham mini-pub to close

The Cob and Coal pub in Oldham's Tommyfield market will close on June 1, with its final trading day on May 31. The announcement was made by landlord Chris Riley, who cited the upcoming market closure and expiring licenses as reasons for the decision. The pub has won multiple awards during its six-year run.

Award-winning Tommyfield pub The Cob and Coal will pour its last pint on Saturday, May 31, bringing the curtains down on six celebrated years of trading.

Landlord Chris Riley, who also operates the multi-award winning Fox and Pine in Oldham town centre with wife Michelle, announced the shock closure on social media, confirming the market micropub will not relocate into the forthcoming market redevelopment.

“We won’t be moving into the new market development, but we are very proud of what the Cob and Coal achieved in its six years,” Riley said. “We have won Rochdale Oldham and Bury CAMRA pub of the year, Greater Manchester CAMRA Pub of the Year, R.O.B. Cider pub of the year, twice, and was short-listed for We Love Manchester pub of the year. I’m sure it will be missed by many.”

Riley explained that expiring licences, insurance and broadband agreements left little incentive to renew given the market’s scheduled summer closure, but hinted the concept could return: “Watch this space though, as it might reappear in some form or another.”
