Police issue 'key witness' appeal following death of elderly woman a week after town centre tram stop incident

Police are appealing for a key witness following the death of an elderly woman a week after she got stuck in tram doors at Oldham Central Bee Network tram stop. The witness is not a suspect but may have crucial information. Separately, a cannabis farm was discovered in Chadderton Central, leading to two arrests.

Police are urgently seeking a key witness who helped an 88-year-old woman after she became trapped in tram doors at Oldham Central Bee Network tram stop on February 14.

The incident occurred around 10am when the tram was stationary at the Greater Manchester station. The woman, who became caught in the doors, received assistance from a man who police now need to trace.

The elderly woman died a week later on Saturday, February 22, prompting detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit to launch a full inquiry.

Investigative Support Officer Aislinn Sweeney emphasized: “As our investigation continues, we are keeping an open mind into how this woman tragically passed away. It is unclear whether it will be connected to this incident, but following proactive patrols, CCTV trawls and active enquiries we have been unable to identify this man we believe has key information that could help us.”

Sweeney stressed the man is not suspected of any wrongdoing: “I would like to make it clear he is not a suspect in this investigation and is not connected in any way to our investigation. We simply want to identify him as a witness to the initial incident to understand more.”

Anyone with information should call 0161 856 4741 or 101 quoting incident 461 of 22/02/2025. Anonymous tips can be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
