Seven New Terraced Homes Approved Despite Traffic Safety Concerns in Mossley
Tameside council’s planning panel has approved controversial plans for seven terraced homes on a grassy bank beside the San Giorgio restaurant in Mossley, despite fierce opposition from residents who warn the development will create a traffic nightmare. The Stamford Road site, located next to a busy five-way junction, has sparked fears that queueing traffic will effectively split the town in two.
The decision came after councillors delayed their initial ruling to gather updated traffic data following a recent fatal crash in the area. While the council’s highways team reported no increased safety risks, local representatives remained unconvinced. “How can you look at that plan and say there is not going to be an increased risk to safety for residents of Stamford Road,” Coun Jack Homer challenged at the meeting. “Is this safe for residents and is there an increased risk to drivers on the road? I say there is more risk. Given this is for seven homes, does this benefit outweigh the risk?”
Neighbours and business owners pleaded with the panel to reject the Wickens Estates proposal, with one business owner warning it would “close down town for two years” during construction. Coun Jackie Lane described her own experience driving through Mossley that morning, stating it took her 30 minutes to travel just 50 meters. Despite these concerns, the panel concluded they could find no planning reason for refusal and approved the development by majority decision.
