Oldhamer Milad set to run a gruelling 5k each day during Ramadan
Milad Sarwar, a 25-year-old from Oldham, will run 5km daily during Ramadan to raise funds for Nessa’s Trust, a charity he founded to support impoverished families in Bangladesh. The challenge aims to provide food, shelter, and emergency aid, with a target of £3,000. Milad has previously raised significant funds through similar efforts, including £20,000 for flood relief in 2022.
A 25-year-old man from Coppice is running 5km every day during Ramadan while fasting to raise funds for struggling families in Bangladesh.
Milad Sarwar, who founded Nessa’s Trust in 2019, will pound the pavements of Oldham’s parks including Dovestone’s and Alexandra Park throughout the Muslim holy month. The marketing graduate hopes to raise at least £3,000 for the charity named after his grandmother, who he calls “the most important and inspirational person in my life.”
“The challenge aims to raise funds for struggling families in Bangladesh, providing food, shelter, and emergency aid to those living in extreme poverty,” Sarwar said. “What started as a small initiative to provide clean water wells has grown into a lifeline for families, delivering emergency flood relief, building homes, and ensuring people in need receive food and support.”
The training has proved “gruelling” for the novice runner, but Sarwar draws motivation from the people he aims to help. “In Bangladesh, I’ve seen rickshaw drivers cycling 15-20km every single day while fasting, just to earn a small living. After all that hard work, some of them still go to bed hungry. I’m only running a fraction of their distance, and I’ll be able to rest after. They don’t have that luxury.”
This isn’t Sarwar’s first charitable feat. In 2022, he raised £20,000 in just two days to provide emergency assistance for families affected by devastating floods that left millions homeless. He and his team have also climbed Mount Snowdon and Ben Nevis while fasting to highlight daily food insecurity.
The charity’s work gained national recognition in 2024 when ITV’s Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway invited Sarwar and his team onto the show, surprising volunteers with all-inclusive holidays in appreciation of their efforts.
