Oldham Tuneless Choir encourages you to sing in 2025

Oldham Tuneless Choir is inviting new members to join in 2025, offering a free taster session on January 15. The choir, open to all singing abilities, emphasizes fun, socializing, and health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental wellbeing. Founded by Gemma Cunliffe in 2019, the choir provides a supportive environment for those who may not consider themselves good singers.

Oldham Tuneless Choir throws open its doors on January 15 for a free taster evening aimed at anyone who has been told they “can’t carry a tune in a bucket” and wants a happier, healthier start to 2025.

Doors at Billingtons on Ascroft Street open at 7 pm, with leader Jess Leavy starting the 7.15 pm session with playful warm-ups before launching into tuneless classics by Abba, Queen and favourite 80s hits. No-one is asked to sing in parts; every voice simply belts out the lead at whatever pitch it can muster.

Founder Gemma Cunliffe discovered the therapeutic power of singing after losing her partner Paul and her mother within a year. “One thing that helped me with my grief was singing, I found it incredibly cathartic and it was something I was keen to carry on with when I moved to Oldham,” she said. “The friendships made through choir have also helped me immensely and I would encourage anyone feeling lonely to come along and give us a try. Our members are warm and friendly and our sessions are full of fun and laughter. Five years on I still feel the benefits after each session.”

Leavy, who has conducted the fortnightly gatherings since 2022, says newcomers needn’t worry about ability. “We get so many enquiries from people who are curious about the choir but are not sure if it is for them, or worry they sing too badly. This is a perfect opportunity to come along and see without any pressure to participate.”
