Oldham to become the 'centre of the universe' with a homecoming visit from Professor Brian Cox

Professor Brian Cox is returning to his hometown of Oldham in July for a series of events aimed at inspiring future scientists and promoting STEM education. The visit includes teacher celebrations, primary school assemblies, business engagement, and a Q&A session for secondary and college students. The initiative is part of Oldham's strategy to boost STEM skills and career opportunities in the borough.

Professor Brian Cox will return to his Oldham hometown this July to lead a series of events designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and strengthen STEM education across the borough.

The renowned physicist and television presenter, who attended Hulme Grammar School, will spend three days engaging with students, teachers, and business leaders through a program called “Great Horizons.” His visit begins July 1 with a celebration event for science teachers and school leaders from across Oldham’s educational institutions.

The following morning, Cox will host special assemblies for primary school pupils, taking them on what organizers describe as “a fascinating tour of the galaxy” while encouraging participation in the Great Science Share for Schools campaign. That afternoon, he will meet with business leaders and council officials to launch a 365-day challenge aimed at regenerating STEM careers in the town.

“I am very much looking forward to putting Oldham at the centre of the Universe, where it belongs,” Cox said. “I believe strongly that every young person should have the opportunities to be equipped with the knowledge and skills that they need to go out into the world, and beyond it.”

The visit concludes July 2 with an evening Q&A session at Oldham Sixth Form College for secondary and college students. The entire initiative, developed in partnership with Oldham Council, Oldham Enterprise Trust, and The University of Manchester among others, seeks to create lasting connections between education and industry to drive STEM skills development in the region.
