Lisa Lott, Sustainability Lead and English Teacher at Hathershaw College, has been awarded the ‘Outstanding Conservation Educator’ prize at this year’s Chester Zoo Conservation Education Awards.

The accolade was presented during a celebratory ceremony in Chester, where Mrs Lott represented the college and was honoured for her exceptional dedication to conservation education.

Mrs Lott’s work has transformed how students engage with environmental issues, embedding a culture of action and awareness across the school and the wider Pinnacle Learning Trust.

She leads the annual Sustainability Week, involving over 500 students in hands-on eco activities, and has spearheaded initiatives including:

  • No Mow May to encourage wildflower growth
  • Installation of bug hotels, bird boxes, and a hedgehog hotel to boost biodiversity
  • A single-use plastics audit, followed by a campaign for sustainable alternatives and a new school laminating policy

Her innovative approach integrates conservation across subjects, uses drama and performance to communicate climate issues, and employs tools such as word clouds to measure student engagement.

A Certified Carbon Literate educator, Mrs Lott is soon to train as a facilitator to deliver carbon literacy training within school.

She said:
> “I’m truly honoured. This recognition reflects the hard work of our student Eco Committee and the commitment of all staff at Hathershaw.”
