Oldham RL Foundation and Park Cakes Bakeries to launch huge wellbeing project

Oldham RLFC 1876 Foundation and Park Cakes Bakeries have partnered for a one-year community wellbeing project aimed at improving physical health, mental health, and school engagement in Oldham. The initiative includes fitness programmes for adults, mental resilience workshops, and school-based activities to promote healthy lifestyles and community cohesion.

Oldham RLFC 1876 Foundation and Park Cakes Bakeries have launched a year-long wellbeing partnership that will deliver community-focused physical health, mental health and schools engagement programmes across the borough.

The collaboration targets three key areas: adult physical education, mental resilience initiatives, and school engagement activities, aiming to tackle Oldham’s challenges around social mobility, cohesion and community building.

“We’re incredibly excited to partner with Park Cakes Bakeries on this transformative wellbeing project for the Oldham community,” said Chris Chamberlain, chief executive of the Oldham RLFC 1876 Foundation. “This collaboration represents a significant opportunity to leverage the power of sport to not only improve physical and mental health, but to inspire positive change in the lives of residents, particularly young people. By working together, we aim to break down barriers to opportunity and create lasting impact that resonates throughout Oldham for years to come.”

The ‘Back Onside’ Fitness & Wellbeing Programme offers six-week fitness initiatives for adults aged 18 and over, delivered by Oldham RLFC players and staff in comfortable, supportive environments with separate male and female sessions. The foundation’s mental health programmes use rugby league to engage individuals facing low-level mental health challenges through a six-week Mental Fitness Project, with staff delivering resilience and stress management presentations across various settings.

School programmes include multi-sports activities, competitions, arts and crafts showcases, and healthy lifestyle assemblies across targeted Oldham primary and secondary schools. Park Cakes Bakeries, which employs over 100 team members with more than 30 years’ service each, will also receive volunteer opportunities with the foundation and bespoke ticket offers for Oldham RLFC home games at Boundary Park.

Andy Parsons, Group Managing Director at Park Cakes, said: “We are delighted to support Oldham Rugby Club in their community initiative programmes.”
