Oldham philanthropist Sir Norman tours veteran care village where a wing is named in his honour

Sir Norman Stoller, a prominent Oldham businessman and philanthropist, visited Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford, where a wing named in his honour was unveiled. His charitable trust donated £4m towards the £12.5m redevelopment, which includes a 64-bed care home, dementia care units, and independent living apartments. The facility also features a museum and an Armed Forces Support Hub. Sir Norman praised the modern and caring environment during his tour.

Sir Norman Stoller praised the “amazing” veteran care village in Salford where a wing bears his name, following a £4 million donation from his charitable trust that helped transform the century-old facility.

The Stoller Charitable Trust’s contribution funded part of the £12.5 million redevelopment of Broughton House Veteran Care Village, which reopened in 2022 with expanded services for former service members. The Stoller Wing on the ground floor features a gym, hairdressing and barber’s salon, and a veterans’ mess that hosts events and entertainment.

The renovated complex now includes a 64-bed care home with two 16-bed households specifically for veterans with dementia, plus independent living apartments. An Armed Forces Support Hub provides assistance to elderly and working-age veterans living in the community, while a museum preserves the facility’s history dating back to 1916, when Broughton House first opened its doors to ex-service personnel.

During his visit, Sir Norman toured the facility alongside trust project manager Stephen Lowe, guided by chief executive Karen Miller, trustee and former RAF fighter pilot Peter Curtis, and head of nursing Lore Popa. Miller noted that the trust’s generosity “was instrumental in helping our charity realise our vision to create the wonderful facilities we have today,” adding that Sir Norman expressed particular satisfaction at seeing “first-hand the modern, comfortable and caring environment” his support helped create.
