Oldham joins new support network for veterans
Oldham Council has joined the £50 million VALOUR pilot network, a Government-backed support service for veterans, aiming to provide integrated assistance in housing, health, employment, and mental wellbeing. The scheme is being rolled out across Greater Manchester, Liverpool, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire, with plans for a national rollout by 2026.
Oldham veterans will receive streamlined support through a new £50 million government-backed programme that unites local councils, the NHS and charities under one coordinated network.
The VALOUR (Veterans’ Active Local Outreach and Urgent Response) pilot launched this week across Greater Manchester, Liverpool, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, with Oldham Council joining the initiative to provide integrated assistance for housing, health, employment and mental wellbeing services.
Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah represented Oldham at the official launch in Trafford, where she emphasized the borough’s commitment to former service members. “Oldham has always stood proudly with our Armed Forces, and I’m really proud that we’re now part of the VALOUR pilot. It’s a chance to build on everything we’re already doing to support veterans in our borough,” Shah said.
The council’s participation builds on existing veteran support measures, including discounted leisure centre access through Oldham Active and protections ensuring veterans face no disadvantages when accessing council services. Oldham first signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2013 and renewed its commitment earlier this year, currently holding Silver Award status in the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme while pursuing Gold Award recognition.
Minister for Veterans and People Al Carns announced that the northern pilot programme will serve as a blueprint for national implementation beginning in 2026. “From South Yorkshire to Liverpool City Region, I am delighted that veterans across the North of England will be the first to benefit from VALOUR and get better access to the tailored support they need,” Carns stated.
