Tributes are paid to former Oldham Mayor Ginny Alexander, who passed away, highlighting her support for local charities and her role during the pandemic.

Oldham Mourns Loss of Former Mayor Ginny Alexander, A Champion of Local Charities

Oldham is grieving the loss of a remarkable woman who served as the town’s first citizen from 2019 to 2021. Ginny Alexander, who died in the early hours of 12 November, is being remembered for her dedication to local charities and her warm presence in the community.

During her mayoral term, Alexander focused her efforts on supporting several local charities, with Oldham Cats Rescue on Middleton Road, Manchester, M24 2AD, holding a special place in her heart. It was from this organisation that she adopted her beloved cat, Lucky, who became a symbol of her compassionate spirit.

Tributes have poured in from her family, former council colleagues, and community organisations. Her husband, Adrian, announced the news on Facebook, describing her as “an upstanding member of her local community” and inviting donations to Oldham Cats Rescue in lieu of flowers.

Oldham Council has opened a Book of Condolence at the JR Clynes Building for residents to share memories and messages of support. Councillor Zahid Chauhan, who served as mayor immediately after Alexander, recalled their friendship: “Oldham has lost a remarkable woman, and I’ve lost a friend.”

Local football club Avro FC also acknowledged her contributions, crediting her with pivotal support during the pandemic-era NHS shirt campaign.
