Human placenta discovered in Werneth Park, Oldham

A human placenta found in Werneth Park on Friday afternoon has prompted an urgent search for a mother and newborn baby who may need medical attention.

The discovery was made at approximately 2:40pm when a member of the public alerted police to a suspicious item in the park. Officers immediately secured the scene, which remained cordoned off overnight as searches continued.

Medical professionals confirmed the item was a human placenta, with experts indicating the birth likely occurred within the previous 24 hours. While there is no risk to the wider community, authorities are focusing their efforts on locating the mother and child to ensure their wellbeing.

“This is not a criminal investigation, but one into the welfare of a mum and baby,” stated Detective Inspector Andy Day of the Oldham district. “Medical experts have advised us that it is likely the birth has occurred in the last 24 hours, and it’s possible that mum or baby are, or could be, in need of medical attention.”

Police are conducting extensive enquiries including searches of UK databases and coordination with partner agencies to identify the mother. Officers will maintain a presence in the area to address community concerns.

Anyone with information about the mother or baby’s identity, or anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the Werneth Park area within the last 24 hours, is urged to contact police on 0161 856 8906 or 101, quoting log 1860 of 28/03/25.
