New town centre entrance now open
Oldham Council announces the opening of Snipe Gardens, a new green space and public entrance to Oldham town centre, aimed at improving accessibility and aesthetics for visitors and residents.
Oldham has opened a new green gateway to its town centre with the unveiling of Snipe Gardens, transforming the former site of the Snipe Inn pub into a welcoming pedestrian walkway connecting the bus station to Henshaw Street.
The garden, which greets visitors as they exit the bus station, represents the latest phase in the council’s town centre regeneration efforts. Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, joined representatives from contractor Rowan Ashworth Ltd - including Managing Director Anthony Ashton, Site Foreman Adam Driffield, and Contract Manager Jimmy Goodwin - to mark the completion of the project.
“This is an important step towards building a better Oldham,” Cllr Shah said. “For many visitors, this is one of the first places they see when they get off the bus, so it’s vital the entrance to the town centre feels open and welcoming to all. Snipe Gardens is more than just a green space, it’s about improving the town centre for everyone who lives, works, studies or visits here. I’m proud to see this project taking shape and bringing new life to our town.”
The development comes at no cost to council taxpayers, with funding provided entirely through United Utilities and other partnership arrangements. Snipe Gardens joins the recently completed Town Centre Park and forthcoming housing developments as part of Oldham’s broader regeneration strategy.
