Mountain rescue team dash to assist stricken biker

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team assisted in rescuing a young male biker who fell off his mountain bike near Ogden Reservoir. The patient was immobilised and transported via helicopter to the hospital, with 15 team members involved for two hours.

Fifteen rescuers spent two hours Saturday freeing a young mountain biker who crashed on steep ground above Ogden Reservoir between Milnrow and Newhey, plunging Oldham Mountain Rescue into a race against fading daylight to reach him.

North West Ambulance Service raised the alarm in mid-afternoon; within minutes team vehicles were threading along the narrow reservoir lanes while paramedics already on scene stabilised the injured rider below the tree line.

The casualty was immobilised with a vacuum mattress, lashed to a stretcher and hauled hand-over-hand up the slippery incline, the slope so severe that rescuers rigged rope systems to keep the litter level and prevent further injury.

At the ridge top a North-West Air Ambulance helicopter waited, rotor blades turning; the youth was transferred aboard for the short flight to hospital, leaving the hillside quiet again as dusk settled over the water.
