Drama on the moors

Ten members of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team responded to an emergency call on Saturday afternoon to assist a female climber who sustained an ankle injury descending Birchen Clough in Saddleworth. The team provided medical assessment and immobilization before transporting the casualty to an ambulance for hospital transfer.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team scrambled ten members to Saddleworth on Saturday afternoon after the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust reported a woman had twisted her ankle while descending Birchen Clough.

Rescue vehicles sped to the clough where one of the unit’s Remote Rescue Medical Technicians splinted the injured ankle before the woman was lifted into a team Land Rover and driven down the valley. At the road-head she was handed over to a waiting NWAS ambulance crew for the trip to hospital.

The operation kept OMR volunteers busy for 90 minutes.
