Meet the officers dedicated to tackling retail crime at the Arndale Centre

A new retail crime team comprising 40 student officers has been established at Manchester's Arndale Shopping Centre to tackle retail crime, antisocial behaviour, and burglary. The initiative has led to increased arrests, reduced crime rates, and positive feedback from businesses and the public. The student officers gain hands-on experience under experienced mentors, focusing on key skills and targeting prolific offenders.

Manchester Arndale has become the training ground for 40 student police officers deployed in a new retail-crime crackdown that has already delivered 182 arrests in four months and cut shoplifting by almost a quarter.

The recruits, stationed full-time at the city-centre mall, focus on the ten most prolific thieves targeting stores while learning investigative skills under the watch of experienced tutors. Since the unit launched, burglary inside the centre has fallen six per cent, anti-social-behaviour reports are down 46 per cent and overall retail crime has dropped 22 per cent.

Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins said the initiative tackles “the challenges of retail crime and economic growth in Manchester” while giving newcomers “invaluable hands-on experience” from their first weeks on the job. “These officers are engaged in quality investigations and the development of advanced problem-solving skills,” he said. “The responses from the public and staff have been very positive and the team are going from strength to strength.”

Student officer PC Siobhan Smith admitted she was “nervous to start my independent patrol” but said confidence “has improved massively” after leading cases and working alongside classmates. “We have made a really good team and been able to support each other through everything,” she said. Centre director David Allinson praised the partnership, noting that “the safety and security of everyone who visits Manchester Arndale remains our top priority”.
