Major road closed due to burst water main

A burst water main on Waterloo Street in Oldham has led to a road closure, with repairs expected to last until Friday. United Utilities is handling the issue, but Oldham Council was not initially informed. Traffic is flowing smoothly except for minor congestion on Park Road.

Waterloo Street in Oldham’s Glodwick district remained sealed at both ends Thursday after an underground water main ruptured, sending United Utilities crews scrambling to dig up the carriageway between Woodstock Street and Hardy Street.

Oldham Council warned drivers that the emergency closure—imposed with no advance notice from the utility—could stay in force through Friday while engineers replace the damaged pipe. “United Utilities did not inform the council about the road closure,” the town hall said, adding that highways staff were now “working with the water company to help divert motorists along alternative routes.”

Traffic data showed only light delays on nearby Park Road, but the shut-off blocks direct access to Oldham Bethel Church, the Jalalabad Jamay mosque and the local Post Office. A United Utilities spokesperson confirmed: “Engineers are currently fixing a leak on Waterloo Street in Oldham. We are working as quickly as we can to get the work completed and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”
