Local Dance School Gets Council Backing

Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah and Deputy Mayor Cllr Brian Hobin visited Elm Arts Company, a family-run dance school in Failsworth, to support their work with young people, including a group selected for the Dance World Cup Finals in Spain. The school faces challenges like limited space and funding but has a strong community impact.

Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah and Deputy Mayor Cllr Brian Hobin visited the Elm Arts Company in Failsworth on Thursday to witness firsthand how a cramped dance studio is producing England’s representatives for this summer’s Dance World Cup Finals in Spain.

The family-run dance school, operating from a space too small for safe rehearsals, trains children from working-class families—many receiving free school meals—who have earned selection to compete for their country despite financial hardship. Founded by a mother and daughter joined by extended family, Elm Arts emerged from their personal experience with barriers blocking children from performing arts training.

“What I saw at Elm was something truly special,” Cllr Shah said after meeting the dancers. “These young people are full of talent, and the passion from the team behind them is clear. This is about more than dance; it’s about giving young people purpose and real chances in life. I’m proud to support them and will do all I can to help them find the space and support they need to keep growing.”

The school, which has already launched local children into roles on Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, and West End productions including Matilda and Les Misérables, urgently needs £51,000 to cover World Cup competition costs. They are seeking a larger venue for June and July rehearsals and ultimately want a permanent building to establish a community hub. “Thank you to both Cllr Shah and Cllr Hobin for your kindness and for believing in these children,” said Ferne Collins, Head of Talent Development. “With your support, I truly believe we can build something that makes a real and lasting difference, for the children, their families and Oldham.”
