Hulme Grammar School chemists reach national final

A four-strong team from Hulme Grammar School has competed in the national final of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual “Top of the Bench” contest in Cardiff.

Oliver and Freddie, both in Year 9, Harry in Year 10 and Year 11’s Azlan qualified for the Cardiff University final after winning the North-West heat staged by Liverpool University.

The quartet travelled to Wales on Friday evening and spent Saturday in the university’s Centre for Student Life, where they first sat a demanding theory paper on the chemistry of air.

After lunch they tackled a two-hour practical that required them to adjust the classic “blue-bottle” demonstration so its colour change occurred at precisely 50, 100 and 200 seconds.

Although the Manchester school narrowly missed a podium place, supervising teacher Dr Millington praised their enthusiasm and accuracy.

“The boys were brilliant and incredibly positive throughout the day,” he said. “They represented Hulme with great spirit.”

The national title went to Winchester College. Hulme Grammar, whose former pupils include physicist Professor Brian Cox, medical researcher Dame Mary Susan Bailey, fluid-dynamics expert Dr Chris Wareing and emergency-medicine specialist Dr Darren Kilroy, continues to build on its science tradition.
