Hathershaw College Launches Saturday Peer Tutoring Program with Sixth Form Partners
Fifty-plus Year 11 students arrive at Hathershaw College each Saturday morning for personalized tuition from recent alumni now studying at Oldham Sixth Form College, as the schools partner to deliver peer-supported revision sessions.
The program, which draws nearly a quarter of Hathershaw’s Year 11 cohort, pairs current GCSE students with 15 Year 12 tutors who left the school just months ago. These OSFC students, all part of The Pinnacle Learning Trust alongside Hathershaw, provide subject-specific support across English, maths, science, history, geography and French, while sharing revision strategies they used for their own exams.
The peer tutors complete a specialized training program designed by Yipiyap and delivered with OSFC Assistant Principal Lewis Entwistle, covering leadership, communication, emotional intelligence, teamwork, teaching techniques and safeguarding. “It taught me how to be a good leader and be assertive,” one student tutor reported, noting the project’s impact on their confidence and communication skills.
Sessions run in casual clothes with refreshments provided, creating what Principal Mark Giles calls “a more relaxed and grown-up learning environment, similar to that experienced at college.” The flexible program requires no commitment to attend every session, encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning while earning the national minimum wage for their former classmates who now serve as tutors.
