Great British Spring Clean continues at Failsworth section of the Rochdale Canal

Community volunteers, including staff from First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO), cleaned the Failsworth section of the Rochdale Canal as part of the Great British Spring Clean initiative. The event, led by Northern Lily and Failsworth Walking Group, collected significant rubbish to improve the local environment and canal wildlife.

Volunteers paddled through the Rochdale Canal in Failsworth on Saturday, hauling rubbish from the water in canoes and kayaks as part of a community clean-up that targeted the litter-plagued waterway between Ridgefield Street and Marlborough Drive.

Northern Lily and the Failsworth Walking Group spearheaded the operation, joined by eight staff volunteers from First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) for the national Great British Spring Clean. The teams worked both on and off the water, collecting a significant amount of waste that had accumulated along the canal banks and beneath the surface.

“Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make a big difference to this part of the canal by giving up their Saturday morning,” said FCHO Stronger Communities Manager Naomi Martin-Smith. “The clean-up was a brilliant example of what happens when people come together with a shared passion to go out and improve where they live. But it’s not just about picking up litter, it’s about pride, partnership and positive action, and we were delighted to be involved because we’re proud to support initiatives that empower residents to take ownership of their neighbourhoods.”

Northern Lily director Victoria Holden emphasized the hidden nature of canals makes them prime targets for fly-tippers. “The canals are amazing spaces for nature but because they are hidden, they tend to get the worst of fly tipping and litter. Funding and support from FCHO are absolutely vital for us to be able to deliver these sessions, look after our area and help keep it litter-free for people and nature to enjoy.” The housing association is backing similar clean-ups across Oldham through April 6, having launched its campaign with a major litter pick around its new £20 million West Vale development.
