Former pub ‘left to rot’ for years is finally demolished

The former Bull's Head pub in Grains Bar, which had been derelict for nearly a decade, has been demolished to make way for three luxury homes. The building, which later became an Indian restaurant, had been described as an 'eyesore' by locals. Oldham Council approved the redevelopment plans in 2022, and the new homes will feature modern amenities. While some residents welcomed the demolition, others lamented the loss of the historic building.

RUBBLE now sits where the derelict Bull’s Head once loomed over Grains Bar, after contractors razed the former pub and curry house that neighbours say had “blighted” the Saddleworth junction for nearly a decade.

The two-storey pebble-dash building, last poured a pint in 2015 and later traded briefly as Indian restaurants Vamasaki and Blue Pearl, was torn down last month to clear the way for three four-bedroom luxury homes with private parking.

Oldham Council approved plans by Wardle Properties Ltd in 2022 for the hillside plot at the crossroads of Ripponden Road, Oldham Road, Ship Lane and Grains Bar Road, opposite the Grains Bar Hotel. Each detached house will feature three bathrooms—two en-suite—and a ground-floor WC; two will have open-plan kitchen-dining-living space, while the third keeps living and kitchen areas separate.

In its planning submission the developer said the vacant building had become “unbefitting” of the rural, green-belt setting. Residents posting online agreed, calling the boarded-up pub a long-standing “eyesore” that “stood out for all the wrong reasons”, though others lamented a once-popular watering hole they said was simply “left to rot”.
