Double header concert events will mark brass band's big birthday

Dobcross Silver Band is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a series of concerts, including a commemorative event on March 29 at Holy Trinity Church featuring guest soloist Mike Cavanagh and the Black Dyke Band, and a Gala concert in November at Civic Hall Uppermill. The band has a rich history of musical excellence and community engagement, with recent successes under Musical Director Jason Smith.

Dobcross Silver Band will mark its 150th anniversary with a pair of headline concerts this year, capping a remarkable turnaround that has carried the village ensemble from the brink of collapse to national champions.

The celebrations begin on Saturday, 29 March at Holy Trinity Church, where guest soloist Mike Cavanagh - a former Dobcross player now regarded as one of Britain’s finest young baritone virtuosos - will perform alongside the band and members of the Black Dyke Band. Tickets are on sale now at the Band Club, the Village Store, and from chairman Andy Black.

A November gala at Uppermill Civic Hall will follow, showcasing the Dobcross Youth and Training Bands together with the Dobcross Brass Monkeys under musical director Phil Cumberworth. Between these milestones the band will contest the Buxton Festival, march on Whit Friday, and continue its monthly “Showcase Brass” series - the next guest is Ashton Band on 23 March at 2 pm.

Musical director Jason Smith, appointed in 2019, has steered the group from uncertainty to the fourth-section national title in 2022 and a steady haul of Whit Friday prizes. “Please come and support the band as we celebrate this major landmark and help ensure the band continues to prosper well past 150 years and preserve its legacy for future generations,” a spokesperson said.
