Dobcross by torchlight
Dobcross, a village in Saddleworth, held a traditional torchlit procession with dozens of residents participating. The event, which included a parade from the brass band club to Churchfields, featured the Dobcross Youth Band and carol singing.
Dobcross blazed with Christmas spirit last night as dozens of villagers hoisted flaming torches above their heads and marched through Saddleworth’s streets in a centuries-old yuletide ritual.
The procession set out from the brass band club with men, women and children falling in behind the Dobcross Youth Band, their torches cutting bright arcs through the winter darkness as the column advanced toward Churchfields. Once gathered on the open ground, voices rose in unison for traditional carols backed by the band’s brass and percussion, the music carrying across the pretty Pennine village.
The turnout showed that, even in an age of electric lights and digital entertainment, the appeal of fire-lit fellowship endures.
