Dancing for their first birthday!

Saddleworth Women's Morris and Clog celebrated their first birthday with a festive dance across Delph, Dobcross, and Uppermill, despite cold weather, delighting audiences. The group, which has grown significantly since its launch, is now preparing for the Easter season and welcomes new members.

Saddleworth Women’s Morris and Clog marked their first anniversary with a spirited winter procession through the heart of the community, as 25 dancers and musicians braved freezing temperatures to showcase traditional morris dancing across three villages.

The celebration began at Albion Farm in Delph before winding through Stoneswood care home, The Swan Inn in Dobcross, and concluding at The Cross Keys in Uppermill. Spectators lined the route to watch the colorful troupe perform their intricate dances despite the bitter cold.

“When we first launched, I expected just a few people turn up, but enough turned up at the first practice for three sides,” said Lucy Marstin, the side’s squire and forewoman. “It was a wonderful day and we are very appreciative of the turnout.”

The group has flourished since its inception, with Marstin noting they have “gone from strength to strength.” The dancers are now preparing new routines for the upcoming Easter season while welcoming newcomers to join their weekly Wednesday sessions at Denshaw Village Hall from 8pm to 10pm. “But our doors are always open for new dancers,” Marstin added.
