Community group's annual Christmas lights switch-on proves as popular as ever

The Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group successfully hosted their annual Christmas lights switch-on event at the Three Crowns. The event featured the Mayor of Austerlands, Sue Smith, and Santa Claus switching on the lights, with Santa meeting over 80 children in his grotto. Activities included children's crafts and competitions, with mulled wine and mince pies served. The free event also collected donations for Oldham Foodbank.

Scouthead’s Three Crowns pub glowed with festive cheer as the Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group hosted their annual Christmas tree lights switch-on, drawing crowds for an evening that proved more magical than usual.

Mayor Sue Smith flipped the switch alongside a special guest—Santa Claus himself, who arrived earlier in the afternoon accompanied by Mother Christmas and her white horse Charlie. After greeting families outside the venue, Santa settled into his grotto where he met more than 80 local children, listening to their Christmas wishes and handing out small gifts.

Young visitors kept busy with reindeer decoration crafts and a “name the teddy” competition while adults warmed themselves with mulled wine and mince pies. The free event also served as a collection point for Oldham Foodbank, with organizers encouraging donations from those able to give.

Community Group Chair Robert Cragg praised the turnout, noting: “This is the first time we have managed to secure Santa for our Christmas event and we were delighted that so many local children were able to meet him and at the same time collect donations for those who might be struggling at this time of year. Thanks to everyone who helped make the event a great success.”
