Christmas Day rescue drama for mountain teams

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, with assistance from Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team, conducted a three-hour rescue operation on Christmas Day for a woman with a suspected broken ankle in the Dovestones area. The woman was located using phone technology and required a stretcher carry off the moor in the dark.

Christmas Day turned into a three-hour rescue mission for two mountain rescue teams after a woman suffered a suspected broken ankle on the moors above Dovestones.

The Oldham Mountain Rescue Team received the emergency call from North West Ambulance Service on Christmas afternoon, with the injured woman located high on the moor near Ashway Stone using Phone Find technology.

Team members immediately began the challenging ascent carrying medical equipment and stretchers. Upon reaching the casualty, they conducted a medical assessment and determined she would need to be carried off the hillside. With daylight fading, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team called in their neighbours from Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team to assist with the long stretcher carry.

While the woman’s companions were escorted safely off the hill in the remaining daylight, rescuers splinted her ankle, wrapped her in warm clothing, and secured her onto a stretcher. The teams navigated the dark terrain together, eventually reaching an ambulance waiting near the reservoir for transport to hospital.

The operation involved ten Oldham team members and six from Holme Valley, with both teams working together for three hours to complete the rescue.
