Christmas angels flood Saddleworth’s villages

Hand-crafted Christmas angels are being distributed in Saddleworth villages, created by local church groups and community members to spread festive cheer.

Hand-knitted Christmas angels are appearing across Saddleworth as two church groups spread festive cheer through their communities.

Liz Rook from St Chad’s Parish Church and Margaret Hallam from Uppermill Methodist Church spent the year coordinating their teams of dedicated knitters to create 200 colorful keepsakes. Members of Thursday Friends at Uppermill church and the ladies of St Chad’s church crafted each angel by hand.

The first recipients were children from Tuesday Tots joint playgroup, who each took home an angel for their family Christmas tree. This week, the remaining angels will be hidden throughout Uppermill for residents to discover, each carrying wishes for Christmas blessings and the message: “happy hunting.”

In Delph, another flock of angels is preparing to take flight. Sue Lund, Delph’s Chief Elf Organiser, has mobilized members from St Thomas’s and Methodist churches alongside the Piecemakers, Holland Close and Delph Community groups to create their own 2024 choir of angels. Distribution helpers Julie Murgatroyd, Maryon Wearing and Kath Kenyon, known as the Delph Elf Angels, are placing the angels around the parish for villagers to find and take home. Chief Elf Luther and his canine companions Frankie and friends are also participating in the Christmas angel mission.
