Charity triumph for big-hearted pub

A pub landlord in Delph, Alan Warrior, partnered with charity Defibrillators Save Lives to fundraise for life-saving defibrillators in the village. The charity will assist in procuring and installing three defibrillators (with a potential fourth) at a reduced cost, saving £700 per unit. Local resident Cath Johnstone will oversee maintenance, and the devices will be registered on The Circuit for emergency access.

White Lion landlord Alan Warrior’s mission to equip his Saddleworth village with life-saving defibrillators has received a major boost from local charity Defibrillators Save Lives.

Warrior, who runs the White Lion in Delph, met with charity representatives to discuss his fundraising efforts alongside local resident and former North West Ambulance Service first responder Cath Johnstone. The pair sought guidance on purchasing, maintaining and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the emergency devices.

The charity has committed to assisting with the procurement and installation of three defibrillators and cabinets throughout Delph, with hints that a fourth device could also be provided. The support represents significant savings for the community, as Warrior had originally been quoted £1,200 for a single defibrillator without installation or a secure, heated cabinet.

Through the charity’s supplier partnerships, each unit will cost just £1,120 - a £700 saving per installation. The package includes high-quality defibrillators suitable for both adults and children, full rescue packs, emergency bleed control kits and heated, locked cabinets.

“We’ll also register the defibrillators on The Circuit, the national system used by North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, ensuring they are accessible in an emergency,” said group spokesman Scott Woodhead. “Plus, with Cath joining our Heart Hero Team, she will oversee regular checks, ensuring everything stays in top condition. With her background in physiotherapy and strong ties to the community, she’s the perfect person for the role.”

The savings will allow the community to set aside funds for future consumables, including replacement pads.
