The performance was praised by teachers and organisers for its inclusivity and the children's enthusiasm. Funds raised will support local charities.

Young Voices Ring Out in Manchester Cathedral for Joyous Christmas Concert

Forty-four Year 5 pupils from Broadfield Primary School joined more than 200 children from across Greater Manchester to create a spectacular massed choir that filled Manchester Cathedral with music and joy. The children, wearing colourful t-shirts in their school colours (Broadfield in maroon), delivered a heart-warming concert that celebrated ‘The Joy of Music’ through song and poetry.

The young performers treated their audience of families, friends and local dignitaries to a medley of uplifting songs including the rousing anthem ‘Sweet Caroline’, the classic ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Thank You for the Music’, and a jubilant finale of Kool and the Gang’s ‘Celebration’. Poetry written and performed by pupils showcased their literary talents, with Broadfield’s contribution ‘Music Fills Our Hearts With Joy’ declaring: “Music is a playground of peace. It fills our world with joy. A place to escape. A sunshine that warms us all.”

The concert marked the fifth annual Manchester Sings event, now a pre-Christmas tradition that brings together children from diverse schools across the region. Broadfield performed alongside pupils from Whitefield Community Primary, Old Moat Primary, St Kentigern’s RC Primary, St Luke’s CofE Primary, West Didsbury CofE Primary and Withington Girls’ School. Gilly Sargent, Director of Music at Withington Girls’ School and the event’s Choir Director, visited each participating school fortnightly from September to prepare the children for their performance.

“This was a truly inclusive occasion as every child in Year 5 was able to participate, perform and enjoy this most wonderful event,” said Mrs Tracy Haughton, one of Broadfield’s Year 5 teachers, who worked alongside colleagues Miss Laura Thirsk and Mrs Sarah Jones to prepare the pupils. The teachers expressed delight that the children’s enthusiasm and hard work had resulted in such a stunning performance.

The event drew distinguished guests including the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Mrs Diane Hawkins, the High Sheriff Dr Eamonn O’Neal DL, and the Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Paul Andrews. Canon Dr Ian Jorysz, Canon Precentor at Manchester Cathedral, delivered the welcome speech. Funds raised will support homeless charity The Booth Centre and Wood Street Mission, which assists local families living in poverty.
