Awards bonanza for popular Oldham pub

The Fox and Pine pub in Oldham won three CAMRA awards, including branch pub of the year and real cider pub of the year, and announced plans for an 'Oldham Ale Hop' event to promote real ale in the town.

Fox and Pine landlord Chris Riley hoisted three CAMRA trophies above the heads of cheering regulars at his Greaves Street terraced-house pub and immediately issued a town-wide invitation: bring real ale back to Oldham.

The branch members’ vote gave the four-year-old micropub its fourth consecutive Oldham, Rochdale and Bury CAMRA “branch pub of the year” title, along with the real-cider pub honour, prompting Riley to unveil the first “Oldham Ale Hop” for the opening August weekend.

“We want to see a return of real ales to the town centre and offer support to landlords to encourage them to take part in the event,” Riley told the packed bar. “There is great enthusiasm and some fantastic ideas to encourage beer drinkers to join the Oldham Ale Hop around the town.”

Rochdale, Oldham and Bury CAMRA vice-chairman Mike Robinson, who presented the awards, said the branch covers the whole of the three boroughs, “so it’s quite an achievement. The overall range, selection and quality of the beers and ciders on sale at the Fox and Pine over the last 12 months has greatly contributed to the pub being voted the best pub and cider pub in the branch area.”
