Work starts on state-of-the-art complex needs care home In Failsworth

Exemplar Health Care has begun renovating the former Acorn Lodge Nursing Home in Failsworth into a state-of-the-art complex care facility named Walton Grove, set to open in July 2025. The home will cater to adults with complex needs, offering 40 ensuite bedrooms, communal spaces, and specialized care services.

Construction crews have broken ground on the transformation of a shuttered care facility in Failsworth, breathing new life into the former Acorn Lodge Nursing Home that closed its doors this past July.

The 83-bed facility on Guido Street will emerge as Walton Grove by July 2025, offering specialized care for adults with complex medical needs including brain injuries, dementia, mental health conditions, and physical disabilities. Walter Thompson leads the renovation of what will become a 40-bedroom complex split into four intimate communities, each designed to provide a homely alternative to prolonged hospital stays.

Walton Grove will feature ensuite bedrooms alongside communal dining areas, sensory bathrooms, an activities hub, therapy room, and even a beauty salon. The design incorporates feedback from Exemplar Health Care’s Service User Council, ensuring the facility meets real-world needs of future residents through innovative features like height-adjustable kitchen equipment for wheelchair users.

The home marks Exemplar Health Care’s seventh facility in Greater Manchester, joining existing locations in Ashton, Rochdale, Stockport, Warrington and Wigan. Recruitment for positions ranging from care staff to management will begin later this year, with successful candidates completing comprehensive training before the first residents arrive.

“This project marks a significant investment in the local community, and we look forward to welcoming the first residents to Walton Grove at the end of this year,” said Sarah McKee, Commissioning Manager.
