'We will never forgive the monster who took her from us'

Habibur Masum has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 28 years for the murder of his wife, Kulsuma Akter, in Oldham. Masum stalked and threatened Akter before fatally stabbing her at least 25 times in broad daylight, leaving their seven-month-old son behind. Akter's family expressed their grief and stated they would never forgive Masum, calling him a "monster." The judge noted that Akter had predicted her own death at Masum's hands.

Habibur Masum will serve at least 28 years behind bars for the daylight murder of his wife Kulsuma Akter, who suffered 25 stab wounds as their seven-month-old son lay nearby.

The 26-year-old tracked Ms Akter, 27, from their Oldham home to a Bradford women’s refuge last spring after she fled when he held a knife to her throat. Police say Masum exploited her phone location, prowled the hostel’s surrounding streets for days and bombarded her with threats against her relatives, even faking GP messages about their baby’s medical appointments to draw her out. CCTV showed him smiling as he boarded a bus moments after the April 6 attack.

Bradford Crown Court heard Ms Akter had ventured outside only because Masum’s Facebook post falsely claimed he was in Spain. Passing a life sentence on Tuesday, Mr Justice Cotter said the victim had foreseen her own death at Masum’s hands.

In a statement released after the hearing, Ms Akter’s family declared: “We will never forgive the monster who took Kulsuma from us and we do not wish to utter his name. It does not deserve to be mentioned.” They described the mother as “a loving, caring and kind soul” whose smile “would light up any room,” adding: “No amount of time in prison will change the life sentence he has inflicted upon us all.”
