Jealous Husband Jailed for Life After Stabbing Estranged Wife to Death in Bradford
A controlling and violent husband has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years for the brutal murder of his estranged wife, who was stabbed to death in broad daylight in Bradford.
Habibur Masum, 27, was found guilty of murdering 27-year-old Kulsuma Akter in a ferocious knife attack on April 6 last year. The incident occurred shortly after Ms Akter had fled their shared home and sought refuge at a women’s hostel.
Bradford Crown Court heard how Masum stalked his wife for several days before launching the deadly assault. CCTV footage captured the moment he cornered Ms Akter near her accommodation and subjected her to a sustained and vicious stabbing.
During sentencing, Mr Justice Cotter described Masum as “a callous killer” whose actions represented “the most serious of domestic abuse offences”. The judge emphasized that the murder was committed in a “jealous, controlling and merciless fashion”.
The court was told that Ms Akter had recently left the marital home due to ongoing abuse and had been staying at the refuge while trying to rebuild her life. Despite her efforts to escape the relationship, Masum tracked her down and carried out what prosecutors termed a “ferocious” attack.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, Ms Akter’s family said: “We have been left with a painful void in our lives. She was a loving, caring and kind soul with a generous nature. We will miss her beautiful smile which would light up any room she entered.”
Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Wood of West Yorkshire Police said after the hearing: “This was a particularly brutal murder of a young mother who was simply trying to get on with her life after leaving an abusive relationship. Masum’s actions were calculated and showed a complete disregard for human life.”
The investigation revealed that Masum had made repeated threats towards his wife in the weeks leading up to her death. Officers discovered numerous text messages and witness accounts detailing his controlling behavior and threats of violence.
Ms Akter leaves behind a seven-month-old son who was not present during the attack. Family members say they are now focused on ensuring the child grows up knowing about his mother’s strength and love.
The case has prompted renewed calls from domestic violence charities for better protection measures for women fleeing abusive relationships. A spokesperson for Women’s Aid said: “This tragic case highlights the extreme danger faced by women when they attempt to leave abusive partners. We need systemic changes to ensure victims are properly protected.”
Masum showed no emotion as the sentence was passed. He will serve a minimum of 28 years before being considered for parole.
