Latics held to 1-1 draw by Colchester in Boundary Park return
Oldham Athletic’s return to League Two football at Boundary Park ended in frustration as they dominated Colchester United but had to settle for a 1-1 draw in front of 7,799 supporters.
The hosts, playing their first home match in the EFL for three years, fell behind after just eight minutes when Oscar Thorn headed home Teddy Bishop’s cross at the far post.
But Oldham, featuring new signings Joe Quigley and James Robson who went straight into the starting lineup, responded strongly and deservedly levelled in the 36th minute through Josh Hawkes’ low cross that found the corner through a crowd of players.
Reagan Ogle’s long throw-ins caused constant problems for the visitors, with one such missile leading to Kane Drummond firing over from close range on 24 minutes. Mike Fondop’s introduction alongside Quigley created further chances, but Matt Macey denied Luke Hannant before blocking Hawkes’ goal-bound effort on the line.
“We should have won the game,” manager Micky Mellon said. “I lost count how many chances we had where we should score. If you don’t take the opportunities, you make it difficult for yourself.”
The draw leaves Latics still searching for their first win of the campaign ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Swindon Town.
