Local Author Launches ‘Unplugged Runner’ Movement to Ditch Fitness Tech

Author and filmmaker John L Matthews has released a new e-book challenging runners to abandon their gadgets and rediscover the pure joy of running. “Unplugged Runner: What Happens When You Run Free” launched just in time for 2025 New Year fitness resolutions, offering an alternative to data-driven exercise culture.

“If you don’t know what to get the runner in your life, here’s the perfect gift,” Matthews said. The book chronicles his personal journey of running without technology, connecting with nature, and finding freedom from fitness trackers and apps.

Broadcaster Jim White, who wrote the foreword, critiques modern running culture: “Look around at any Park Run and you’ll see people fiddling with gadgets instead of enjoying the moment. In this book, John invites you to try running free. What happens to him is fascinating!”

Editor Denise Cowle describes the work as “a meditation on John’s reconnection with running, nature, and adventure.” Matthews argues that gadgets interfere with running’s inherent pleasure, asking: “Do you need a gadget to tell you you’re enjoying sex? No! So why use one for running?”

The launch includes the first “Unplugged Runner Club” community, branded clothing line, and plans for tech-free running events. “Exercise has become a data-driven obsession,” Matthews said. “Unplugged Runner is about bringing back the fun and focusing on the present moment. I hope this book inspires a movement that helps people reconnect with the joy of running.”

The e-book is available for immediate delivery on Indiegogo.
