Two Men Convicted of Kidnapping and Brutally Assaulting 87-Year-Old Man

Azizur Rahman and Shohad Miah have been found guilty of kidnapping an 87-year-old man and subjecting him to a sustained assault that left him with serious injuries including a brain bleed and knocked-out teeth.

The pair were convicted at Manchester Crown Court on Friday, where Rahman (born 21/05/1986) of NFA was found guilty by majority verdict of kidnap, robbery, section 18 assault, intentional strangulation, and perverting the course of justice. Miah (born 30/04/2000) of Fir Bank Road, Royton, was convicted of kidnap, section 20 assault, intentional strangulation, and perverting the course of justice.

The horrific attack occurred on Sunday 15 September 2024, when the defendants forced the elderly victim into a car with activated child locks, trapping him inside. They subjected him to a violent assault that included strangulation and knife threats, robbed him of his phone, money and keys, forced him to drink alcohol, stripped him of his clothing, and ultimately abandoned him on a dark road in Rishworth, West Yorkshire.

Following the kidnapping, the pair attempted to destroy evidence by burning out the car used in the abduction. However, mobile phone data, CCTV footage, forensic evidence from the burnt vehicle, and dashcam recordings provided crucial evidence leading to their identification and arrest.

Detective Sergeant Rick Bolt of the Major Incident Team stated: “Azizur Rahman and Shohad Miah have been convicted for their heinous crimes. This conviction serves as a reminder that such acts of violence will not be tolerated, and justice will be served. This was not a random attack; the victim was specifically targeted due to a prior visit to Rahman’s home, where he had performed prayers and provided amulets for Rahman’s stepson. Fortunately, the kidnap was captured on CCTV footage, which along with other evidence, led investigation officers to the offenders.”
