Two paedophiles have been jailed for 30 years after sexually abusing boys in Rochdale and Manchester in 80s and 90s

Two paedophiles, David Marsh (74) and Anthony Whitehead (72), have been sentenced to a combined 30 years in prison for sexually abusing six boys in Rochdale, Bolton, and Manchester during the 1980s and 1990s. The convictions followed a five-year investigation by Greater Manchester Police's Complex Safeguarding Team and Child Sexual Exploitation Major Investigation Team. The victims, now adults, were groomed with cigarettes, alcohol, and money. Marsh received 27 years, and Whitehead received 7 years, both required to serve at least two-thirds of their sentences. Authorities believe there may be more victims and encourage survivors to come forward.

Two pensioners who sexually abused six boys in the 1980s and 1990s have been jailed for a combined 34 years after their victims finally broke decades of silence.

David Marsh, 74, from Northenden, received 27 years while Anthony Whitehead, 72, from Atherton, was sentenced to seven years at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court today. A jury unanimously convicted them of 35 sex offences against boys aged 9 to 13 after a five-year investigation triggered when one survivor disclosed his abuse to a person of authority in 2019.

The court heard how Marsh and Whitehead, who operated independently, groomed vulnerable boys across Rochdale, Bolton and Manchester with cigarettes, alcohol and money before taking them to other parts of the city to commit their crimes. Detective Constable Andrea Richards revealed that investigators uncovered video footage of Marsh interacting with young boys in Thailand, which formed part of the prosecution evidence.

“These depraved men are exactly where they should be, in jail, away from causing our communities and those within it any further harm,” Richards said. She noted that victims, who described feeling “knee deep in shame” and harboring deep mistrust of authority figures, worked with police at their own pace to build the case. Both offenders must serve at least two-thirds of their sentences, and police believe additional victims may yet come forward.
