Two Men Jailed for Manslaughter After Fatal Wythenshawe Attack
Daniel Vesey and Jason Trueman have been sentenced to more than 18 years in prison for the manslaughter of James Thorne, who died following a violent attack in Wythenshawe last summer.
Vesey, 39, of Farncombe Close, Wythenshawe, received an extended sentence of 19 years and six months, while Trueman, 38, of Maybury Street, Gorton, was given 18 years and 10 months at Manchester Crown Court. Both had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and section 18 wounding.
The court heard how Thorne, 52, collapsed inside a store on Altrincham Road on the afternoon of Friday 14 June, telling staff he had been attacked that morning. Despite first aid from store employees and rapid ambulance response, he suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital on 1 July.
Investigators determined that Vesey and Trueman had visited Thorne at his Crowhurst Walk home earlier that day, attacking him over approximately ten minutes and causing the fatal injuries. CCTV footage and witness statements identified the pair, who were charged in the weeks following Thorne’s death.
“James was a loving son, father, grandfather, brother & uncle,” his family said in a statement. “He was also a very good friend to a lot of people, we are all devastated by his loss, he will be sadly missed by many.”
Senior investigating officer Duncan Thorpe described Vesey and Trueman as “dangerous individuals who have threatened and bullied vulnerable people in the Wythenshawe area for some time,” adding that their violent actions had left family and friends devastated regardless of intent.
