Two men have been jailed for five years for their roles in summer disorder – and officers are working to tackle outstanding suspects
Two men, Jack Cregan and Colin Brown, have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in violent disorder incidents in Manchester. Brown was jailed for two years and four months for violent disorder and robbery in Piccadilly Gardens, while Cregan received two and a half years for assaulting a bus driver and violent disorder in Newton Heath. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) continue to investigate and appeal for information on remaining suspects involved in the disorder across multiple locations.
Two men have been handed prison sentences at Manchester Crown Court for their roles in separate outbreaks of violent disorder that rocked the city this summer.
Colin Brown, 37, of Moorcroft Road in Northern Moor, received a two-year-and-four-month sentence after admitting to violent disorder and robbery. The court heard how Brown was part of a mob that breached security barriers in Piccadilly Gardens on August 3, 2024, before joining an attack on an innocent man. Brown was also seen shouting abuse at rival groups and police officers, attempting to incite further violence, and forcibly stole a scarf from one victim.
Jack Cregan, 32, of Argyll Close in Failsworth, was jailed for two-and-a-half years following a meticulous police investigation into disturbances in Newton Heath. The investigation revealed Cregan launched an unprovoked assault on a bus driver during chaos on Oldham Road on July 31, which also saw emergency workers attacked and thousands of pounds in damage caused. Cregan initially tried to evade justice by falsely claiming he was committing crimes in Derbyshire at the time, but phone analysis placed him at the scene and officers discovered his mobile device hidden and taped beneath a kitchen cabinet during a search of his home.
Detective Chief Inspector Jill Billington confirmed that 20 adults have now been sentenced in connection with the Newton Heath disorder, accumulating over 25 years of prison time. Police continue to hunt additional suspects across multiple incidents, with 151 people identified from more than 200 public tips. Officers have released images of wanted individuals from disturbances at Rochdale police station, Oldham Road, Piccadilly Gardens, Mosley Street, and Bolton town centre between July 25 and August 4.
