Turning colder and potentially very windy

Oldham is set to experience a significant drop in temperature and an increase in wind, with the potential for wintry showers and frost. A low-pressure system could bring strong winds and even hill-snow over the weekend, with colder conditions expected to persist into the following week.

Oldham’s roller-coaster weather pattern continues with a mild Thursday giving way to a sharp cold snap that will settle across the region through the weekend and beyond, according to local weather expert Jon Baylis.

Thursday morning offers a brief respite with dry spells and hazy sunshine, but conditions deteriorate rapidly as clouds thicken and heavy rain arrives by afternoon, bringing a risk of localized flooding. Winds strengthen significantly overnight, reaching 40-50mph with weather warnings in place, while temperatures peak at 13°C before dropping to 5°C.

The mercury plunges Friday as northwesterly winds deliver sunny spells mixed with wintry showers, pushing daytime highs down to 8°C and overnight lows to just 1°C. Weekend uncertainty centers on a developing low pressure system approaching from the west, with Baylis warning it could deepen across the UK and potentially become the next named storm. The system’s track remains critical - a central path would bring strong winds, rain and hill-snow, while a southern route would limit impacts to scattered wintry showers.

Sunday clears as the low moves away, leaving northerly winds and cold conditions with sunny spells, coastal wintry showers and overnight frost. The outlook shows high pressure building west, establishing a northeasterly airflow that promises sharp overnight frosts, occasional wintry showers and predominantly dry, sunny conditions as temperatures remain firmly below seasonal norms.
